Gwen Lamont (née Kortright Hutton, Canadian, 1909-1978) was born in Fort McLeod, Alberta. She studied at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto, Ontario, from 1925 to 1928, receiving an honours degree in painting. Lamont also studied theatre arts at the Banff School of Art and later taught there. In addition, she illustrated a book of plays for children for J.M. Dent & Sons Publishers. While in Alberta, she joined a group of artists who challenged the traditions of the Alberta Society of Artists to embrace their modernist tendencies. Lamont began exhibiting her work in Vancouver, BC, in 1932. She had a solo exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1938, and regularly exhibited her work at their annual BC Artists exhibitions throughout the 1940s. Lamont relocated to Kelowna, BC, in 1948 and was a dedicated member of the visual and performing arts community. She designed backdrops and props for theatre groups and taught art classes to children and adults. She was involved in the development of the Kelowna Art Gallery in 1976 and is recognized as the gallery's first curator. |
