Biography |
David Alexander (Canadian, b. 1947) is an established artist widely known for his work in painting the landscape. Born in Vancouver, BC, Alexander first studied at the Vancouver School of Art and later at Langara College. He received a BFA from Notre Dame University in Nelson, BC. In 1979, Alexander attended the renowned Emma Lake Artists' Workshops in northern Saskatchewan, and the following year he moved to Saskatoon. He obtained an MFA in visual arts from the University of Saskatchewan in 1985 after researching in London, Paris, Giverny, New York, and Boston. After spending 23 years in Saskatchewan, he relocated to the Okanagan in 2003 and has been working in BC since. His work has been the focus of several solo exhibitions in public art galleries in Canada. In 2012, the Kelowna Art Gallery organized the solo exhibition David Alexander: The Shape of Place, which toured nationally and was accompanied by a catalogue published by McGill-Queen's University Press. Alexander is represented by the Bau-Xi Gallery in Toronto and Vancouver, Peter Robertson Gallery in Edmonton, and Michael Gibson Gallery in London, Ontario. The artist's signature landscapes and waterscapes can be found worldwide in several private, corporate, and public collections. He was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2018. |
